ENROLLMENT: To enroll, please complete the registration form and return it to the North Louisiana Criminal Justice Academy, Deputy Mabria Grosjean at mgrosjean@bossiersheriff.com, or fax the completed registration to the academy at 318-965-3526. All registration forms must be received on or before October 21, 2011.

INSTRUCTOR:  Jack Atherton

Jack Atherton is a retired executive of the Department of Justice, and an Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice at Northwestern State University of Louisiana. At NSU he heads the Unified Public Safety Administration degree program. During his 27-years in law enforcement with the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Jack held leadership and executive positions in eight federal prisons and administrative facilities, including the United States Penitentiary at Lompoc, California, and the Federal Transfer Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was an instructor at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center and Chief of Curriculum Development for the Bureau of Prisons, where he designed, developed and implemented the agency’s prisoner transportation training program, and Use of Force Model.

Jack has taught at eight colleges and universities, received competitive grants for the development of criminal justice and law enforcement curriculum, and served as a Public Information Officer for the Justice Department for two decades. Jack earned his Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice Administration at Oklahoma City University and is a doctoral candidate at Illinois State University

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

COURSE OBJECTIVES:To address issues involved in prisoner transportation and escort with these primary and over-riding concerns:

  • Public safety
  • Officer safety
  • Inmate custody and safety
  • Protection of property
    Perception of public and other entities


This course is taught with an inter-related perspective. We wil also identify the relationships between the multiple factors involved in prisoner transportation and why a linear approach is often inadequate.    

* This course will certainly fulfill requirements of the above standard, and safeguard
   officers, departments and supervisors from civil liabilities.

ENROLLMENT:  There is no enrollment fee for this class.

DRESS: All attendees are expected to maintain a professional appearance by wearing the appropriate departmental uniform or business casual attire.
